Extension Springs

Extension spring designs are used to store energy and to exert a pulling force.

As with compression springs, most extension springs are made from round wire. Typically, they require more space than other helical spring forms. Load is usually limited by hook stress.

There is a wide variety of hook configurations. Some examples are shown below.

Key information needed to effectively design extension springs include:

  • Environment
  • Inside and outside diameter ranges
  • Applied loads between two operating points
  • Maximum extended length
  • Type of ends

Wire diameter range is from 0.004' to 0.625'
